Dos Pueblos High School Foundation Announces Completion of the Class of 2020 Resiliency Mural8/11/2020
August 11, 2020 Goleta, California – The Dos Pueblos High School Foundation announced the completion of the Class of 2020 Resiliency Wall today. The 264 square foot mural incorporates 466 student tiles, as well as the school crest, the year, and “We are Resilient” (an homage to the “We are DP” school slogan). The plaque next to the mural reads: “Dedicated to the Class of 2020 who showed their resiliency and strength during the COVID-19 Pandemic. We are DP!” Over Memorial weekend, graduating seniors were each given a 6”x6” tile to design like a flying graduation cap (the mural captures the mortarboard toss, a graduation tradition the Class of 2020 missed out on). Volunteers painted caps with names on them for those who couldn’t participate so all graduated would be represented. Principal Bill Woodard stated, “Seeing the beautiful mural come to fruition was a wonderfully emotional moment - symbolizing our school coming together to overcome the challenges of last spring to celebrate the class of 2020. I want to thank the DPHS Foundation for spearheading the efforts which will be a lasting legacy to the class of 2020!” “The Dos Pueblos community really stepped up to make this project a reality. We raised over $10,000 in less than two weeks. In addition, Tileco donated over 1,000 tiles, local artist Scott Boger painted the crest and lettering, Eliesa Bollinger, our high school ceramics teacher, spent the summer firing tiles, and local craftsmen and alumni, Clayte Robinson and Jorge Lorca, did the installation” stated Rechelle Ringer, DPHS Foundation board member and parent of a 2020 graduate, “We had staff, parents, students and community members all working on different aspects and the end result is a lasting tribute to the class, the school and the community. We couldn’t be more pleased with the results.” The Foundation still plans to do a ribbon-cutting celebration with the graduating class when it is safe to do so. In the meantime, the mural may be viewed on the south wall of the high school gymnasium.

Dos Pueblos High School Foundation to Build Class of 2020 Resiliency Mural to Honor Graduates5/7/2020 May 7, 2020 Goleta, California – In support of the graduating class of 2020, the Dos Pueblos High School Foundation is crafting a tile mural to celebrate the seniors’ resilience during a disappointing senior year. The mural will capture the iconic moment at the end of the graduation ceremony when each graduate tosses their cap into the air. Each of the 466 seniors is being given one 6”x6” tile for the approximately 250 square foot mural to design in the way they would decorate their mortarboard for the graduation ceremony. The words “We are Resilient” and “MMXX” (Roman Numerals for 2020) will also be part of the design. Principal Bill Woodard stated, “With our seniors losing so many rite-of-passage celebrations, we have been working hard to come up with ways to show that their school community cares. The tile mural is a wonderful way to create a lasting tribute to our graduates. On behalf of the class of 2020 and the entire DP community, we are so very grateful to the DPHS Foundation for spearheading this project.” The mural will be placed on an outside wall at the school and will include a dedication plaque to the Class of 2020, with the goal of completion by the end of summer for a ribbon-cutting ceremony before students head off to college. “If gubernatorial orders prevent bringing the students together for a celebration in July or August, we will wait until Winter Break so students who are going away for college can participate. This is their moment, so we will wait as long as we need to” stated Rechelle Ringer, DPHS Foundation board member and parent of a 2020 graduate, “What they have accomplished, during a very trying time, is remarkable and worth celebrating for years to come.” The DPHS Foundation has created a fundraising page at give.dphsfoundation.org/2020 where they hope to raise $10,000 to cover the material costs as well as installation. The DPHS Foundation is a 501(c)3 and all donations are tax deductible. More information can be found at www.dphsfoundation.org. |
